Lorenzo Gignous (Modena 1862 – Porto Ceresio 1958) studied art at the Brera Academy in Milan and spent his life in Lombardy. He was destined, as a result, to belong to that group of artists born in the late 19th century and trained in the figurative styles of that time, who were working in the 20th century while nonetheless continuing to depict the earlier period.
Although he painted many portraits, he is remembered as a landscape artist whose work was fully in keeping with the 19th-century tradition of artists active in the regions of Lombardy and – owing to the lasting influence Fontanesi had on his work – Piedmont.
The variations of light are a distinctive feature of his work, which has recently enjoyed a revival.
