This partial view of a medieval village shows a slope, which on the left side reaches a building only just barely visible, while on the right we see two houses at the roadside.
The painting, dated 1935 and hence from the period of Francalancia’s artistic maturity, displays the characteristics of silent immobility, absence of human activity, that mark his painting. The perspective is imperceptibly yet definitely deformed, so as to make the viewer uncertain as to the real distances between the buildings along the road. Road, houses and sky are all enveloped in cool tones that contribute to the subtle charm of the work.
