Painted in 1961, this work shows a disorderly arrangement of light-coloured bed sheets, in stark contrast with a gloomy and inscrutable environment. Here Vespignani summarizes the entire arc of his vicissitudes from the dark years of the War until that moment, before turning in a new direction.
The forms seem animated by a movement that leads them to dissolve, adding tragic connotations to the theme of urban solitude. This theme of urban solitude as the physical and psychological location of an existential setback is thus clearly shown, bearing witness to a kind of realism that is different from that of Guttuso, both at the level of language and at that of psychological and mental significance.
