The activities and objectives of the Gruppo dei sei which Lionello Venturi and Riccardo Gualino sponsored in Turin are described in the notes on Galante’s painting Paesaggio con case. Compared with the extremely rarefied tones used in that painting, the present work appears much bolder in the dark shades of the tree filling the foreground and pushing back the view of the houses scattered over the hill in the background, which are rendered in ever paler colours, fading almost to invisibility in the highest and farthest house. The last house virtually blends into the unremarkable and silently subdued sky. The view is thus seen in a perspective rendered not by lines but only through the shading of colours, conveying the sense of sweet abandon and poetry that emanates from the countryside, slowly disappearing like a gently fading melody.
