The fisherman hauling in his catch is viewed almost frontally. The outstretched arms form a sort of pincer, which thanks to splashes of light/colour, stand out against the dominant dark tones. The silvery fish consigned to the bottom left of the composition are like a source of cold light.
The work, done in 1930, is a good instance of Sironi’s expressive choice following the Futurist period, after his encounter between his own particular brand of Futurism and the Metaphysical painting of De Chirico. The structural solidity of the forms was a constant of Sironi’s work that never left him. The light plays upon colour in an effect of animation, palpitation, but never, even in its lively brightness, attenuates the material consistency of the fisherman’s limbs in action or that of the creel for the fish he forcefully brings in.
