Ansa del Tevere

The natural movement of the river, at a point where it curves into the bend that hides it from view, is caught by Stradone as dramatic animation of a landscape whose terrain appears gashed by the water between the two banks.
The picture, painted in 1947, is entirely in line with the results achieved by Stradone from the early 1940s onwards and therefore comes culturally before his later developments, although it shows the essential elements of the painter’s language.
The meeting between a moment of expressionist excitement and a visionary moment, expressed in dense pictorial matter is evidence of the important achievement of this painter, who for a long time was undervalued by critics but who has recently been justly acclaimed.
