In a sketchily depicted interior a girl stands before a small table on which, among other objects, there is a surprising masklike head with a feathered hat. The acidulous contrasts between greens and reds that appear eroded by the light stress the extraneous appearance of the mask in a domestic scene.
The picture, painted in 1944, well represents Gentilini’s position between the Roman School, an indirect but concrete memory of the metaphysical “surprise” and a very particular expressionist inclination. At the same time there is also clear evidence here of a trace of the surrealist method consisting in displaying objects together in an incongruous situation.
