The work shows a completely deserted corner of an industrial periphery. A road separates some densely packed buildings from a fragment of another building and a stunted tree, which appears to match the chimney stacks of the factories. The forms, marked by a vivid and acidulous range of colours, tend towards a two-dimensionality that places them close to the abstract.
This urban landscape, painted in 1930, links up with an evident memory of the futurist Sironi’s peripheries, with suggestions deriving from contact with futurist works in an amalgam in which the search for a way out of the climate of the 20th century “return to order” marks a decisive step in the Italian artistic context of the time.
