The female sitter is presented, from her face down to a wide cleavage, in a rich range of reds that vary with the play of the light, from extremely bright zones to more tender areas in shades of rose. A clear drawing in black emphasizes the eyes, the nose and the mouth, contributing to the dramatic, clearly visible although not ostentatious effect of this painting.
Tamburi painted the picture in 1943 and used it to signal his joining the Roman and Milanese polemically expressive extremes of the anti-Novecento movement in the tragic period of the last few years of the Second World War.
