Two buildings at the right press toward the centre, surrounded by gloomy vegetation beneath a sky that, in the background, conveys a pale sunlight. The work is dated 1923, or after Tozzi’s endorsement of the poetics of Valori Plastici. The apparent simplicity, even banality, of the composition is belied by the powerful evocation of silence and mysterious solitude. The enigmatic suspension of Metaphysical painting is naturalized, so to speak, taking on a familiar aspect and penetrating into the normal to create, from the very normalcy of things, a reference to an elusive “elsewhere”. A subtly insinuated sense of disquiet pervades this slice of nature, well beyond the normalcy or banality that marks it at first glance.
