Jacob van Huchtenburg war born in Haarlem in 1644. With his younger and more famous brother Johan he was among the leading painters of the Haarlem school in the second half of the 17th century. Jacob studied under the landscape artist Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem before travelling around Europe. In 1662 he moved to Italy, settling in Rome until 1667 where he painted numerous Italian landscapes in a style close to that of the Bamboccianti, his contemporaries. On his way back to Holland he stopped in Paris, remaining there until 1669, probably with his brother, who may have joined him in Rome earlier. He was a member of the Haarlem guild of painters from that year until his death in Amsterdam on 8 January 1675.
