Giorgio De Chirico, Cavalli

Cavalli

Cavalli

The fluid forms and jumble of volumetric shapes in this fanciful work by De Chirico recall the more baroque style practiced by the artist in the 1950s. All the vivacity of the composition is in the fanning of the manes as though by wind, the powerful, agitated tail that flicks in the foreground, the wild eyes of the horses, and the almost frenetic rhythm of the sequence of hooves raised against a compact but unidentifiable object that may be a rock.
The almost monochrome rendering of the animals contrasts with the vigorous blue of the sky above, while the narrow strip of land and bleached light below suggest the sea may not be far away.
